  • Offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is a direct threat to Florida’s beaches. Yet the state remains vulnerable as a long-standing Congressional moratorium on drilling in the eastern Gulf near Florida expires in just eight months. Join us as we learn about efforts underway to create a permanent drilling moratorium, and hear from local and national voices advocating for protection for Florida’s beaches and coast.

Florida U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor will join the event live via video link to detail legislation she introduced to create a permanent moratorium on drilling in the eastern Gulf, and how residents can help to push for its passage. Local beach residents, business owners and environmental advocates will be there to add their support for a permanent moratorium and speak about how local residents can get engaged in the effort.

An event page with more information can be found on the Healthy Gulf Facebook page.
  • “Antarctica: Seasons of Water and Ice” will be on exhibit on the second floor of UWF’s John C. Pace Library, Room 215, October 23 through December 12. A public reception will be held in the exhibit space on Monday, November 29 from 5-7 p.m.

This traveling exhibition is a selection of photographs and research by oceanographer Dr. Wade Jeffrey. The artwork on display was created during two oceanographic research trips to western Antarctica during 2019. The images from these expeditions present a contrast between the long days of summer and very short days of winter. Images show some of the diversity of Antarctic vistas, from gray to blue skies, and open water to icebergs and sea ice. The main focus of Dr. Jeffrey’s research on these trips was examining a unique group of single cell plankton called mixotrophs that can live and grow like both plants and animals.

Wade Jeffrey is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of West Florida where he is the director of the Center for Environmental Diagnostics & Bioremediation as well as the Reubin O’D. Askew Institute for Multidisciplinary Studies. As an oceanographer, his research has taken him to some unique environments around the world, always with a camera.

For information on the John C. Pace Library hours of operation, visit uwf.edu/library. For more information on the exhibit, contact cgambel@uwf.edu.

This event is being presented by the John C. Pace Library; The Art Gallery at UWF; UWF Department of Art; and UWF College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities

  • Don your gay apparel–or your ugliest holiday sweater–and join us in singing your favorite carols and songs. You know the tunes, we’ll display the words on the big screen, and our Women’s Ensemble, directed by Isabelle Peterson, will lead the hour of music-making.

In addition, we’ll hear a couple of numbers performed by our special guests from the Gulf Coast Chorale, directed by Brenda Smith. Come enjoy holiday treats, snap selfies with Santa – and let the music of the season spark your holiday spirit. Once again, Generation Church hosts our family-friendly celebration, and admission is free--but we hope you’ll bring a nonperishable food item for Manna Pantries.
  • A different time is evoked in this marvelously theatrical show, a live broadcast of The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room on December 21, 1942.

The spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop music meant "Strike Up the Band" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is accurately captured as the harassed producer copes with a drunk lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mic, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and the trumpet playing sound effects man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.
  • Join Bike Pensacola for the most popular bike ride in town--the Slow Ride! Each month we explore the quiet, scenic streets of Pensacola's many historic neighborhoods for a fun and leisurely ride among friends.

For December we’ll ride as part of the Gonzalez St. Shareway Day, following Gonzalez St. through Eastside, North Hill and into Brownsville. We’ll stop at North Hill’s lovely Alabama Square to take in the sights. Following the Ride there will be activities and educational exhibits at Cordova Square, Alabama Square and Bayview Park. Riders are encouraged to wear holiday regalia!

Because most cyclists are “self taught,” each month we offer information about bicycle laws, safety tips, and addressing different bicycling skills that will help keep rides safe and enjoyable. The ride will be about one hour and ten minutes long, at a casual pace.

Nobody will be “dropped” or left behind. Children must be at least 10 years of age to ride their own bicycle, and ages 10 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No pets are allowed on the Rides. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law; ages 16 and up helmets are recommended but are not required by law. We will enjoy a ride escort by officers of the Pensacola Police Department.
