  • The University of West Florida Department of Theatre presents an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s "Macbeth" entitled “Macbeth: Sands of Fate” adapted by Ashley McGlothren. Performances will be held February 16 - 18 and February 23 - 25 with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. All performances will take place in the Besser Studio Theatre of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82, on the Pensacola campus.

    In a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by environmental disasters and societal collapse, Macbeth: Sands of Fate reimagines Shakespeare's classic tragedy within a barren wasteland covered in shifting sands. This desolate setting, reminiscent of a once-thriving civilization now reduced to ruins, adds a new layer of symbolism to the tale of power, ambition, and moral decay.

    “The stage is transformed into a stark landscape, giving the feeling of a land full of towering sand dunes, remnants of crumbling structures, and a constant haze,” said Ashley McGlothren, adaptor and director of the production.” The aesthetic is a fusion of dystopian and medieval, where remnants of technology coexist with makeshift medieval-style costumes and weaponry.”

    Due to the seating configuration, tickets are extremely limited and latecomers will not be admitted. General admission ticket prices are $20 per person for adults, $16 per person for senior citizens and active military, $14 per person for non-UWF students and UWF faculty and staff, and $7 for high school students. UWF students are admitted free with their Nautilus cards.

    Tickets can be purchased at the CFPA Box Office, Building 82, by calling 850.857.6285 or online at uwf.edu/tickets.

    Due to adult subject matter, this show may not be appropriate for all audiences. This production is set in a non-traditional setting with non-traditional casting.

  • Join several local scientists and climate advocates as they hold a “teach-in” on the science of climate change using the recently released National Climate Assessment (NCA). The NCA is a comprehensive report on climate change in the U.S. and is published every four years, representing the combined work of dozens of Federal agencies and many of the nation’s top scientists.

    Hotter temperatures, stronger hurricanes, heavier rainstorms, and the resulting impacts on public health and the economy are just a few of the impacts of climate change on Pensacola and the Gulf Coast. The teach-in is an intensive session of climate science and impacts for a general audience, helping local residents learn more about the epic challenge of our time, how Pensacola is already being impacted, and the decisions we can make now to help protect our community.

    Presenters include:

    Goldie Kpeli, a University of West Florida (UWF) graduate student studying the effects of climate change on public health in the southeast;

    Jay McGee, who holds a BS in biology from the University of West Florida and led UWF’s 100% Renewable Campus Campaign;

    Larry Chamblin, a longtime Pensacola climate advocate who hosted Pensacola’s first public conversation on climate change in 2007; and

    Christian Wagley, who holds a master’s degree in biology/coastal zone studies from the University of West Florida and is an environmental advocate for the nonprofit group Healthy Gulf.

    Please join us for an interactive presentation and discussion!

  • In 1983, the nationwide anti-abortion protest movement began in Pensacola, driven by extremists who believe that violence is justified to stop abortions. Far from being defined by the anti-abortion movement, however, the city all along has been a site of struggle by supporters of bodily autonomy, reproductive rights, and women's rights. The struggle continues today against unrelenting efforts to restrict and criminalize access to abortions, contraceptives, and reproductive health care. This event will explore lessons from Pensacola's past and local efforts to reclaim a better future. The event includes a panel discussion and a short film on Pensacola's abortion rights history. The event is free and open to the public.
