  • The University of West Florida Dr. Grier Williams School of Music will present the Symphonic Band in concert on Thursday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in the Mainstage Theatre at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82, on the Pensacola campus.

Under the direction of Dr. Jeff Osarczuk, this program will include works by Richard Saucedo, Eric Whitacre, Frank Ticheli and Malcom Arnold.

One of the featured pieces in the program is “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs” by Frank Ticheli. This work is built from four Shaker melodies - a sensuous nature song, a lively dance tune, a tender lullaby, and most famously, "Simple Gifts," the hymn that celebrates the Shaker's love of simplicity and humility. In setting these songs, Ticheli sought subtle ways to preserve their simple, straightforward beauty. Melodic freshness and interest were achieved primarily through variations of harmony, of texture, and especially, of orchestration.

The Symphonic Band is committed to performing the finest wind band repertoire and is open to all UWF students with prior experience on an instrument. Students in the Symphonic Band are enrolled in numerous majors and minors across the UWF campus.

This event is free and open to the public and no tickets are required. For more information, visit uwf.edu/cfpa or call the CFPA box office at 850.857.6285.
  • The University of West Florida and the Dr. Grier Williams School of Music will present the Runge Strings Orchestra in concert on Thursday, October 6 at 6 p.m. The concert will be held in Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 7979 N. Ninth Ave, Pensacola.

For their first performance of the season the Runge Strings Orchestra will present a selection of Baroque and early classical music from Germany, Italy and England. The performance will close with a piece composed by American female composer, Florence Price, “Adoration for String Orchestra”. Published in 1951, “Adoration” was initially written as a short piece for organ in ABA form intended for use in church. It has proven attractive for arrangers, including Elaine Fine, who has orchestrated it for solo violin and string orchestra.
The Runge Strings will be joined on the program by the UWF String Quartet. In addition, Jose Meza, Emma Pooler, Dr. Leonid Yanovskiy, Olivia Enkey, Dr. Victoria Adamenko, Delaney Adams, and Sam Spradling will be featured as soloists.

This event is free and open to the public and no tickets are required. For more information, visit uwf.edu/cfpa or call the CFPA box office at 850.857.6285.

  • Please join us for this important community symposium series about Child Abuse hosted by area United Methodist Churches in partnership with Gulf Coast Kid's House and Santa Rosa Kid's House.

Did you know that the number of kids (0-18) that are registered as official victims of child abuse (emotional, physical, sexual) in the Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties alone could fill the Bay Center with a child in each seat? That's a major public health and spiritual problem and we can do something with education and shining a light on this sinful behavior in our communities.

The Symposium will feature different community agencies (as organized by GCKH and SRKH) presenting current trending information regarding the awareness, prevention, detection, and recovery of child abuse in our area featuring panelist-style education and Q+A. Each week is different topics and different panelists so will have fresh content.

All performances will take place in the Mainstage Theatre of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82, on the Pensacola Campus.

Noël Coward’s comedy “Blithe Spirit” revolves around socialite and novelist Charles Condomine who hopes to find material for his next book by holding a séance. • The Inflation Reduction Act was just passed by the U.S. Congress, representing the nation’s largest-ever investment in confronting climate change. Join us as we learn more about the Act and how it will impact Gulf coast communities, from the municipal to the individual level.

While the Act contains some provisions that could expand the use of fossil fuels, it also heavily incentivizes clean renewable energy that could help residents, businesses and local governments install solar panels, access electric vehicle charging stations and make homes and buildings more energy-efficient.

Our presenters are four NW Florida residents who work on issues of climate change, energy and the environment:

    Mark Jackson, City of Pensacola
    Larry Chamblin, 350 Pensacola
    Paige Plier, international sustainability consultant
    Christian Wagley, Healthy Gulf
