  • Immerse yourself in the rich and vibrant culture of Japan at this year's Japan Culture Day on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the University of West Florida’s Japan House (Building 71). This free event promises an exciting lineup of cultural activities, workshops, performances and displays for participants of all ages.

    The Japanese cultural activities will include samurai armor displays, ikebana flower arranging, kimono dress-up and Japanese calligraphy throughout the afternoon. Demonstrations of Eisa Okinawan taiko drumming, traditional Japanese dance, tea ceremony and martial arts will take place at various times. Participants can make their own “shichi-go-san” children’s celebration drawings, bookmarks and origami creations to take home. Free food and drinks will also be available.

    The Japan Culture Day is presented by the Japan-America Society of Northwest Florida and the University of West Florida’s Office of International Affairs. It is sponsored in part by the Consulate-General of Japan in Miami and the Japan Foundation, New York.

    The Law Office of Michael Gibson is coming together with Feeding the Gulf Coast and Embrace Florida Kids to celebrate the upcoming holiday season!   • The Excelsior Band began on November 23, 1883, celebrating the birth of John A. Pope's son, John C. Pope.

    The Excelsior Band, believed to be the oldest continuous marching Jazz band in the United States, will celebrate its 104th Anniversary with a free concert at the Mobile History Museum on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 2:00 PM.

    The band has received numerous local, state, regional, and national awards since its inception. Among the awards received are 213 Alabama State Council on the Arts Folk Heritage Award and the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Award.
  • Bagdad Village is hosting a Christmas Tour of homes on Saturday, December 2nd. Four homes and one church in the Bagdad historic district will be open to participants who want to see the features of homes built in the 1800's.

    Tours will be conducted between the hours of 10:00 and 4:00.

    The tour has appropriately been named "A Heart Pine Christmas Tour" in recognition of the lumber produced at the local mill between 1830 and 1939. Music, refreshments, and a walk-through history will make this a "must do" event.

    Activities will begin at the museum located at 4512 Church Street in Bagdad.

    Tickets are available now at the Bagdad Museum between 10:00 and 12:00 on November 11, 18, and on December 2nd at the door.
