World Ocean Day 2021
Tuesday, June 8, 2021, will be a day of environmentally focused games, activities, and art projects at the Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Center. The Chamber along with multiple partner agencies will be presenting information on protecting our beaches and marine habitat in conjunction with World Ocean Day. The open house will feature presentations by Florida Fish and Wildlife on the impact of invasive lionfish, including a live feeding of the lionfish which are housed in the educational display tank at the Perdido Key Visitor's Center. Niuhi Dive Charters and Ocean Strike Team will educate on lionfish removal efforts through spearfishing while scuba diving. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zookeepers will be on site with several indigenous species of mammals and reptiles for up-close encounters. Clean Horizons will unveil art made from plastics picked up off our local beaches and Escambia County Marine Resources will offer fun and games including a recycle relay and a beanbag throw to knock stuffed lionfish off a reef while missing the native species that belong there. The Perdido Chamber will provide marine-themed coloring murals for young artists to help complete and ECUA's "Quench Buggy" will be onsite offering water and lessons on protecting the aquifer. Friends of Pensacola State Parks, The Perdido Key Association, and Friends of the Southwest Library will share more information on protecting the environment geared to all ages.
Sip & Science
Grab your drink and join us for a trip back into the Viking Age, where the gods were fearsome, the stories were funny, and the mead was strong. You'll learn how the nine realms of Norse Mythology were created, and the ways that Loki caused trouble for Odin, Freya, Thor and the other gods of Asgard. We'll take a tour of the planets that these gods were associated with, and explain why each planet is connected to a different day of the week. The show will end with a dazzling display of Norse Constellations, and an explanation as to why bad poetry exists. Enjoy beer, wine, appetizers, and plenty of space (both socially distant and universe wise). That's right, you get to eat, drink, and relax while enjoying legends and trivia under the stars…so we hope you like Norsing around because planetarium shows about mythology are Loki the best. Check in a little early for each show to play with some of our out-of-this-world space activity stations from the NISE Network. Space is limited to 15 guests in the planetarium at a time, and masks must be worn when not eating and drinking. Shows run from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m. The planetarium will be sanitized between shows for guest safety as well. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for the 6:00 p.m. show and 7:15 p.m. for the 7:30 show. Our Planetarium is an inflatable dome. Guests sit on cushions on the floor of the planetarium to view the show. Due to social distancing guidelines, space is limited. Purchase tickets lunar rather than later to reserve your space. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled showing to check in, grab your drinks and apps, and get settled. Our planetarium is powered by Gulf Power PRICING $20 for nonmembers/$18 for members
(Ages 21 and up only)
Ticket price includes admission to 1 planetarium show, access to our Space Stations, drink tickets for adult beverages (beer and wine), and light appetizers.
Flicks on the Field - Dolphin Tale
Join us at the Pensacola Greyhound Track Friday, June 11, 2021, for a FREE family-friendly drive-in movie. The show will start at dusk on the Wind Creek Casino outdoor movie screen. Enjoy the movie from the comfort of your vehicle, or bring lawn chairs or a blanket to watch while safely socially distancing. Concessions will be available at the location. This month's movie, in recognition of World Ocean Day, is Dolphin Tale, inspired by the remarkable true story of a courageous dolphin named Winter and the compassionate people who banded together to save her life.
The Choral Society of Pensacola’s Women’s Ensemble in Concert
The Choral Society of Pensacola’s Women’s Ensemble, under the direction of Isabelle Peterson, will perform a program of secular and sacred music with pianist Meredith Stemen. The ensemble is a group of singers from the larger chorus and generally ranges in size from eight to twenty singers. They represent the Society in events throughout the community. In the months before the pandemic began, for example, they hosted the Society’s annual holiday singalong, participated in a Waterfront Mission fundraiser organized by the Pensacola Folk Music Society, and sang the national anthem at a practice of the Blue Angels. The group currently comprises Sarah Brown, Gwyn Chadwick, Pam Davey, Vicki Gordziel, Marie Hall, Carla Quinn, and Jamie Meyerholz. They’ll perform the three songs they sang to open the Society’s May 15 program at Pensacola State College: “All Things Bright and Beautiful” by Philip E. Silvey, “An die Musik (To Music) by Franz Schubert, and “Ständchen” (Serenade) by Josephine Lang. The brief program will also include “Love's Lullaby” by Augusta E. Stetson, C.S.D, and two traditional spirituals (“Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” arranged by Joe Ridenour, and “Steal Away to Jesus,” arranged by the conductor), as well as “A Suffrage Hymn” by Mrs. Alfred E. Clark, published in 1912.

Exhibition: "Citizens: Response, Rhetoric, Representation"
View "Citizens: Response, Rhetoric, Representation," which will be on exhibit at the Pensacola Museum of Art from April 17-July 4, 2021. About the Exhibition: As the UWF 2021 Common Read, Claudia Rankine’s award-winning, genre-defying "Citizen: An American Lyric" created a safe space for students to engage with issues of race during a time of national reckoning with racism. Woven into classes in English, Art, and Honors, Citizen engaged students with the banal, daily experience of racism in this country, those so-called “micro-aggressions” that are, in fact, expressions of larger social and historical narratives. As a collage of poetry, prose, and visual art, "Citizen" invites exploration into the creative potential of different media and the ways that they speak to one another. This exhibition represents a collection of student work across disciplines based on their engagement with "Citizen." Taken together, it mirrors the hybrid forms of Rankine’s work and gives us a snapshot into the robust creative and critical energies we will need to confront the insistent, everyday injustices of our times. For more information about the exhibit, PMA hours and museum fees, visit pensacolamuseum.org.
