  • What: Bike Pensacola’s May Slow Ride

Where: Ride More Bicycles, 59 E. Gregory St., Pensacola

When: Friday May 10 6 pm

Join Bike Pensacola for the most popular bike ride in town--the Slow Ride! Each month we explore the quiet, scenic streets of Pensacola's many historic neighborhoods for a fun and leisurely ride among friends.

For May our host and sponsor is Ride More Bicycles, a downtown Pensacola bicycle shop that opened in 2015 and does business at their iconic corner storefront at Gregory and Tarragona St. Ride More offers new bicycles and accessories for sale, along with a full suite of services to include tune ups, suspension services, electronic support, bike assembly and more. They also host group rides every Tuesday and Saturday.

Because most cyclists are “self taught,” each month we offer information about bicycle laws, safety tips, and addressing different bicycling skills that will help keep rides safe and enjoyable. The ride will be about one hour and ten minutes long, at a casual pace. Nobody will be “dropped” or left behind. Children ages 10 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and no pets are allowed on the Rides. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law; ages 16 and up helmets are recommended but are not required by law. And we will enjoy a ride escort by officers of the Pensacola Police Department.

For much more information about the Slow Ride please visit Bike Pensacola on Facebook or call 850-687-9968 or bike@pensacolacan.org

Our soloists will be Pensacola Opera’s Jan Miller Studio Artists: soprano Rachel Fitzgerald, mezzo-soprano Camille Robles, tenor Micah Perry, and baritone Joseph O'Shea.

  • This March, for Women’s History Month, PenArts is presenting Jerrie Cobb’s story, THEY PROMISED HER THE MOON, at The Gordon Community Art Center. It is the inspiring story of one woman’s life and how she affected the future for all female astronauts.

In 1960, Life Magazine listed Geraldyn (Jerrie) Cobb as one of only nine women in their “100 most important young people in the United States", yet today, her story remains virtually unknown. In the pursuit of becoming an astronaut, Jerrie Cobb trained with the “Mercury 13” program (13 female astronaut trainees). She surpassed many of her male “Mercury 7” colleagues in the testing they all underwent as they trained for spaceflight. Yet just as she was heading to the next phase of training in Pensacola, FL, NASA decided not to include the “Mercury 13” program because Congress deemed that it was a waste of money for NASA to train women.

THEY PROMISED HER THE MOON is an inspiring, yet infuriating, tale of one woman’s powerful sense of purpose and her efforts that eventually opened the door for women to become astronauts nearly two decades later.

There are also two matinees at 2:30pm on 3/29 and 3/30.
