Synthesis is the annual senior Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) exit show for the Department of Art and Design at UWF. This exhibition is the culmination of the department students' hard work and their entrance into the world as professional artists. This show is exhibited both on campus at The Art Gallery (TAG) and in downtown Pensacola at the Pensacola Museum of Art (PMA).

The show will be on display at TAG from Thursday, April 25, through Friday, May 10, with an opening reception of April 25 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Celebrate five centuries of music by Black composers, as the Choral Society of Pensacola concludes its season with Lift Every Voice. Artistic Director Peter Steenblik and Treble Ensemble Director Isabelle Peterson will lead the 110-voice chorus, accompanied by organist and pianist Hyunjoo Kim, with soprano Allanda Small as guest soloist.

The program features primarily sacred works, including
• a sixteenth-century setting of a Lenten prayer by the first Black composer known to have his work published,
• a nineteenth-century “Ave Maria” by a composer recognized for his blending of Black folk idioms with European concert music styles,
• a twenty-first century setting of the 23rd Psalm by a singer whose best-known song hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988, and
• “Amen,” an excerpt from the opera Omar, winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Music, based on the autobiography of an enslaved Muslim man who lived in nineteenth-century Charleston, SC.*

About half of the seventeen selections on the program are drawn from Marques L.A. Garrett’s groundbreaking collection The Oxford Book of Choral Music by Black Composers, published in 2023. But through his immersion in the increasing number of available works by Black composers, Dr. Steenblik has rounded out the program with a rich variety of pieces from other sources, and the Choral Society invites audiences to enjoy the results of his exploration.

Join Healthy Gulf for a beach ecology walk along the shifting sands and waters of Santa Rosa Island at Pensacola Beach. We’ll hike along both the Gulf and Sound side of the Island, exploring the changing plant communities and life along the shoreline. Along the way we’ll learn more about terrestrial and aquatic life by examining what has washed ashore, including seeds, shells, plants, fish, crabs and other items both natural and man-made.

The hike will take about one and a half hours to complete. The exact meeting location on the east side of Pensacola Beach will be provided upon registration. The Pensacola Bay Concert Band presents their next performance on Monday, May 20th, 2024 at 7:30pm at the University of West Florida Center for Fine and Performing Arts, 11000 University Pkwy Bldg. 82, Pensacola, FL 32514.

Our “Inaugural Conductor’s Choice Concert…With a Touch of Symphony” will feature music selected by our nine Co-Conductors, and we will welcome guest conductors Tyler Arcari (Tate High School and Troy University graduate) and Dr. Steven Sudduth (University of West Florida interim director of bands and music education). Our feature soloist for the evening will be Dale Riegle, Principal Trumpet of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.

Free admission, but please bring non-perishable food items that will be donated to Manna Food Pantries.

The Pensacola Bay Concert Band is a 110-piece 501(c)3 non-profit community band for adults. Founded in 2014, the PBCB provides a place for adults, regardless of ability, to play in an enjoyable, non-competitive ensemble, without tryouts or membership fees. What: Bike Pensacola’s May Slow Ride

Join Bike Pensacola for the most popular bike ride in town--the Slow Ride! Each month we explore the quiet, scenic streets of Pensacola's many historic neighborhoods for a fun and leisurely ride among friends.

For May our host and sponsor is Ride More Bicycles, a downtown Pensacola bicycle shop that opened in 2015 and does business at their iconic corner storefront at Gregory and Tarragona St. Ride More offers new bicycles and accessories for sale, along with a full suite of services to include tune ups, suspension services, electronic support, bike assembly and more. They also host group rides every Tuesday and Saturday.

Because most cyclists are “self taught,” each month we offer information about bicycle laws, safety tips, and addressing different bicycling skills that will help keep rides safe and enjoyable. The ride will be about one hour and ten minutes long, at a casual pace. Nobody will be “dropped” or left behind. Children ages 10 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and no pets are allowed on the Rides. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law; ages 16 and up helmets are recommended but are not required by law. And we will enjoy a ride escort by officers of the Pensacola Police Department.
