April 28 - Join the UWF College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities for an evening withUWF President Emeritus and anthropology Professor Dr. Judy Bense as she discusses “Presidios of Spanish West Florida.” The event, held at Voices of Pensacola, will begin with a 5:30 p.m. reception followed by a talk and book signing.

Copies of Bense’s “Presidios of Spanish West Florida” will be available for purchase at the event.

Bense’s “Presidios of Spanish West Florida” is published through University Press of Florida, and is a landmark study of Spain's fortified settlements in West Florida. The publication is a result of Bense’s research as a lifelong specialist. The book provides the first comprehensive synthesis of historical and archaeological investigations conducted at the fortified settlements built by Spain in the Florida panhandle from 1698 to 1763. This landmark study brings to light four presidia locations that have long been overshadowed by the presidia at St. Augustine to the east, revealing the rest of the story of early Spanish Florida.
