Pensacola Archaeological Society Lecture presents "Bridging the Non-Heterosexual, Non-Cisgender Identity and Archaeology Gap in Mobile"

Pensacola Archaeological Society Lecture presents "Bridging the Non-Heterosexual, Non-Cisgender Identity and Archaeology Gap in Mobile"

Jenni L. Baggett earned her BA and MA at the University of West Florida graduating with her Master's in 2022. Since then, she’s been working as an archaeologist for Wiregrass Archaeological Consulting. In addition to many other exciting projects, she’s been working on the Mobile River Bridge Archaeological Project.

Jenni Baggett’s paper provides a preliminary foundation for identifying non-heterosexual and non-cisgender identities in the archaeological record as part of the Mobile River Bridge Archaeological Project. The paper includes an overview of Mobile's rich LGBTQ+ history, including the city's once-thriving gay district, and reviews the challenges associated with identifying sexuality at the intersection of race and gender.
