Florida lawmakers are gearing up for the 2021 regular session, with a full plate awaiting them in Tallahassee. WUWF’s Dave Dunwoody spoke with two members of the local delegation –first up, a veteran state legislator.

Doug Broxson, a Republican from Gulf Breeze, is beginning his second term in Florida Senate District-1, after defeating Democratic challenger Karen Butler in November. Prior to that, he served two terms in the House.

It looks like the new Pensacola Bay Bridge will be named in honor of General Daniel ‘Chappie’ James, Jr.

That was the recommendation this week from a bridge naming committee, and legislation to that effect already has been filed.

“The public, in my view, has spoken,” said committee chairman Timothy Burr, hinting at his recommendation as he opened their fourth and final meeting Tuesday evening.

As of this month, state Sen. Doug Broxson is kicking off a one-year term as Chair of the Florida Defense Support Task Force.

Broxson (R-Pensacola) was named by Senate President Bill Galvano to the post after originally placed on the task force by then-President Joe Negron.

“I was the chair two years ago; it’s rotated back to me,” said Broxson. “It’s really been a great honor to go and meet all of our military around the state, and see how the community supports their bases.”
