Amazon.com and the University of West Florida are teaming up for a work-study partnership which, among other things, forms a pathway to employment with the online firm.

It’s the first such partnership in Florida, and UWF President Martha Saunders says it began with a phone call from an associate who works as a consultant for Amazon.

The University of West Florida Historic Trust hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for Museum Plaza, an open air, historic preservation and education project behind the T. T. Wentworth Museum in downtown Pensacola. New UWF President Dr. Martha Saunders stood in the sun and addressed a few dozen people Tuesday morning as she announced the university’s latest downtown project. "This plaza will offer a covered pavilion, a children's play area and outdoor historical exhibits.

January 1 marks a change at the top at the University of West Florida, when Judy Bense steps down as president after eight years.  Her latest honor is being named UWF’s second President Emeritus, joining the school’s first president, Morris Marx.

“It is a signal that you are liked, and that they want to have you keep that title, because you keep that title until you die,” said Bense. “There are some rights and privileges, so we’re working on fun list – one is a parking space.”

Martha Saunders has had a few weeks to settle in to her new position as President-Elect at the University of West Florida. She is currently serving as Provost and Executive Vice President at the school. She sat down with WUWF’s Bob Barrett.

The University of West Florida has chosen its next president. 

There was a hush over the crowd at the UWF Music Hall Thursday morning as Pat Lott, General Counsel to the President read and tallied the votes from the Board of Trustees. It was obvious that everyone in the room was doing the math. Once Lott read the 9th vote for UWF Provost Martha Saunders, the room erupted in applause.

The committee leading the search for the next president of the University of West Florida met Tuesday to start the process of reviewing candidates and coming up with a short list of names. The informal deadline for candidates to apply was Monday, and that’s when a very high profile resume was added to the pile: former Florida Senate President Don Gaetz.

Bob Barrett talked to Senator Gaetz about why he wants to be the next president of UWF. In the interview, Gaetz said:

The University of West Florida celebrated the promotion of two of its own to the rank of full professor during the first Rite of Passage lecture series of 2016.

Honored for their achievements during the event held Jan. 15 at the UWF Argonaut Athletic Club were Dr. Mohamed Khabou, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Science and Engineering, and Dr. Carla Thompson, professor of research and advanced studies in the College of Education and Professional Studies.

The year long reorganization of the various colleges at the University of West Florida has concluded with the announcement of the new College of Health. "To watch a team come together is about the most rewarding thing that I do" said Dr. Martha Saunders, Provost and Executive Vice president of the University of West Florida. She was speaking earlier this year about the reorganization of the colleges at UWF. The final step of that reorganization was announced last week with the formation of the College of Health.

  The University of West Florida officially announced a new partnership Quint and Rishy Studer to bring a new business incubator to Pensacola.

Dr. Martha Saunders has been Provost of the University of West Florida since the beginning of 2013. Last October, she added the title of Executive Vice President of the University.

That change coincided with many other changes going on at the school. WUWF's Bob Barrett sat down with Dr. Saunders to talk about the changes and the future of UWF.
