Two maritime archaeologists from Pensacola are set to take part in the Taraia Object Expedition this fall in search of Amelia Earhart's lost plane. Project leader Dr. Richard Pettigrew, with the Archaeological Legacy Institute, visited recently to meet with them and to collaborate with Navy and Coast Guard military and veterans.

Students and staff from the University of West Florida Archaeology Institute are wrapping up a large-scale excavation of a prehistoric Native American site on the Pensacola campus. Numerous ancient artifacts have been found on the site, which is believed to have been used as a seasonal camp during the Woodland period, 300 BCE - 600 CE.

At a campus dig site, where a required survey tied to planned infrastructure for a new football stadium, researchers with the University of West Florida Archaeology Institute have uncovered artifacts from pre-Columbian Native cultures.

The new children's book, "Luna the Cat," the first in a new "Tales from the Trowel" book series, is grounded in the real discovery of cat remains on one of the 1559 Luna shipwrecks in Pensacola Bay.
