Dan Helms, chief of the Santa Rosa Band of the Lower Muscogee, a decendant of the sister of Caleb Kirkland, Jr., who established Fort Kirkland during the Second Semilole War, discusses his family connection and some of the hardships his ancestors faced during that turbulent time.

An archaeology team from the University of West Florida recently conducted the first field survey in search of the 1800s Fort Kirkland in north Okaloosa County.

University of West Florida anthropology students taking Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping class are working to identify sites in Okaloosa County, where archaeologists will search for the lost Fort Kirkland.
