Navy Federal 5K
Let's get moving together, while also supporting a great cause! Join us on Saturday, April 2, as we celebrate the 12th annual Navy Federal Credit Union 5K Run/Walk/Roll in downtown Pensacola.
Early registration is now open at a discounted rate of $18 for adults and $15 for youth ages 5-13. Children 6 and under can also participate in the Sammie Sprint, a free quarter-mile race around Plaza Ferdinand.

The early registration discount is available through March 18; however, registration will remain open until the start of the race. Registration is required for all participants and includes a race shirt.
This race is designed to be fun for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. After the race, there will be refreshments and entertainment. Navy Federal would like to recognize Cat Country 98.7 and NewsRadio 92.3 FM and 1620 AM for their continued support of this race.
Sip & Science
Grab your drink and join us for a trip back into the Viking Age, where the gods were fearsome, the stories were funny, and the mead was strong. You'll learn how the nine realms of Norse Mythology were created, and the ways that Loki caused trouble for Odin, Freya, Thor and the other gods of Asgard. We'll take a tour of the planets that these gods were associated with, and explain why each planet is connected to a different day of the week. The show will end with a dazzling display of Norse Constellations, and an explanation as to why bad poetry exists. Enjoy beer, wine, appetizers, and plenty of space (both socially distant and universe wise). That's right, you get to eat, drink, and relax while enjoying legends and trivia under the stars…so we hope you like Norsing around because planetarium shows about mythology are Loki the best. Check in a little early for each show to play with some of our out-of-this-world space activity stations from the NISE Network. Space is limited to 15 guests in the planetarium at a time, and masks must be worn when not eating and drinking. Shows run from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m. The planetarium will be sanitized between shows for guest safety as well. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for the 6:00 p.m. show and 7:15 p.m. for the 7:30 show. Our Planetarium is an inflatable dome. Guests sit on cushions on the floor of the planetarium to view the show. Due to social distancing guidelines, space is limited. Purchase tickets lunar rather than later to reserve your space. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled showing to check in, grab your drinks and apps, and get settled. Our planetarium is powered by Gulf Power PRICING $20 for nonmembers/$18 for members
(Ages 21 and up only)
Ticket price includes admission to 1 planetarium show, access to our Space Stations, drink tickets for adult beverages (beer and wine), and light appetizers.
Jones Creek Cleanup & litter boom installation
The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program (PPBEP) is pleased to announce the installation of three litter capture booms. The installation is part of an EPA grant funded project to engage the community in trash removal and prevention, engaging local businesses, existing grassroots efforts, and area schools to reduce water-borne trash and improve the safety, health, and beauty of local creeks. The project will target Jones, Carpenter, and Pond Creek. What happens upstream does not stay upstream. Trapping litter upstream with a litter boom will prevent the negative impacts of litter in downstream locations such as the bayou, bay, and beaches.
The public is invited to watch as the first litter boom is installed at Jones Creek (Lexington Terrace Park) and participate in a creek cleanup on July 31st from 9am to noon. Jones Creek is a 4.5-mile-long freshwater tributary flowing east through the Brownsville and Warrington communities of Escambia County before emptying into the southern arm of Bayou Chico.
The cleanup will occur via land and water. Individuals with kayaks or canoes are invited to paddle the creek and clean areas that are hard to reach from land. There is limited space for paddle crafts and interested individuals should specify if they intend to bring a paddle craft when they register. Volunteers can register online or e-mail Emerson Cheney at edcheney@ppbep.org. The Estuary Program is also looking for long-term volunteers to monitor the boom and collect data on the trash being captured. This data will help the Estuary Program identify sources of trash and develop targeted strategies to reduce the inflow of trash into local creeks.
Individuals that cannot attend the cleanup can still help the Estuary Program to name the three litter capture booms. Name suggestions can be submitted online. Estuary program staff will review and select the final names for the litter capture booms that will be deployed in Jones, Carpenter and Pond Creek. The submitters of the top three winning names will receive a prize.
The Estuary Program is grateful for the support of partners from the Warrington Revitalization Committee, Escambia County, Keep Pensacola Beautiful, Ocean Hour, and Visit Pensacola that are coming together to help support this community cleanup. Closed-toed shoes are required and long pants, sunscreen, hat, bug spray, etc. are recommended. Water will be provided but please bring a reusable water bottle. Volunteers under 18 must have signed parental or legal guardian permission to participate and minors 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

"Talking Insurrection," presented by the UWF Seligman First Amendment Lecture Series
The University of West Florida Reubin O’D. Askew Department of Government presents the Seligman First Amendment Lecture Series.
Join us Feb. 15 as Dr. Mark Graber presents, “Talking Insurrection."
Dr. Graber is a regents professor of government at the University of Maryland. He is recognized as one of the leading scholars in the country on constitutional law and politics. This talk will explore the scope of Section Three disqualification for insurrectionary speech in light of the predominant understandings of free speech and insurrection at the time Section Three was ratified.
The program will be held Feb. 15 at Voices of Pensacola, 117 E Government St, Pensacola. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. with the talk beginning at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and will be on a first-come basis.
This lecture series is made possible by a generous gift from the Jane G. and Fred K. Seligman Endowment. As a Jewish émigré from Nazi Germany in 1934, Fred Seligman cherished the freedoms protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.
To learn more about the lecture, visit uwf.edu/seligman or contact casshcommunications@uwf.edu.
