Hot City - Cool City Walking Tour
Join us for a late afternoon summer stroll through downtown Pensacola as we explore the old and new ways that cities can adapt to the higher temperatures and heavier rainfall of our changing climate. Along the way we’ll look at the many features of buildings, streets, and parks that can help keep cities and their inhabitants cooler and more comfortable while using less energy.
Your tour guide is Christian Wagley of the nonprofit group Healthy Gulf. Christian spends much of his time studying the traditional ways that communities were designed and built in harmony with local climate. We’ll walk where it’s hot and where it’s not, compare temperatures in different areas of the city, and see firsthand how the design of cities shapes our energy use and comfort. Participants are encouraged to dress for the heat, with light colored clothing, natural fibers like linen, hats and parasols.
Forecasts from the National Climate Assessment predict hotter summers, more rainfall and stronger hurricanes in the southern U.S. Pensacola and other cities will need to adapt to the changing conditions in order to protect their economies, public health, and quality-of-life. The Tour begins at Martin Luther King Plaza located in the center of Palafox St—one and a half blocks north of Garden St. The Walking Tour concludes at 5:30 pm.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information please email christian@healthygulf.org or call 850-687-9968.

Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive
United Way of West Florida is proud to host its annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive on Thursday, July 24, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., to help students in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties start the school year fully prepared.
Each year, thousands of local students head back to school without the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers often spend an average of $820 of their own money annually to bridge this gap for students in need. Stuff the Bus ensures that every child—regardless of their financial situation—has access to the basic tools required to learn and thrive.
Community members are encouraged to stop by one of five participating Walmart locations to donate essential school supplies. Volunteers and United Way staff will be collecting donations throughout the day at the Walmarts on Mobile Highway, Creighton Road, Blue Angel Parkway, Pea Ridge, and Tiger Point. The Navarre and Pea Right Walmart locations will accept donations from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
In partnership with Escambia County Public Schools, Santa Rosa County District Schools, WEAR Cares, Cat Country 98.7, News Radio 92.3, and the Pensacola News Journal, Stuff the Bus stands as the only school supplies drive endorsed by both Escambia and Santa Rosa School Districts.
“We believe every child deserves the tools they need to succeed, regardless of their circumstances,” said Laura Gilliam, President/CEO at United Way of West Florida. “Stuff the Bus is an opportunity for the community to come together and make a meaningful difference in the lives of local students.”
Bike Pensacola's July Slow Ride
Join Bike Pensacola for the most popular bike ride in town--the Slow Ride! Each month we explore the quiet, scenic streets of Pensacola's many historic neighborhoods for a fun and leisurely ride among friends.
For this month’s Ride we’re doing a Friday night Ride that has us rolling through historic neighborhoods that include Old East Hill and Belmont Devilliers. There will be an after-party that includes a showing of bike films, a bike trivia game with prizes, and the unveiling of the new Bike Pensacola t shirt. End of the Line Café will serve beverages streetside and offer food specials following the Ride.
Because most cyclists are “self taught,” each month we offer information about bicycle laws, safety tips, and addressing different bicycling skills that will help keep rides safe and enjoyable. The ride will be about one hour and ten minutes long, at a casual pace. Nobody will be “dropped” or left behind. Children must be at least 10 years of age to ride their own bicycle, and ages 10 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No pets are allowed on the Rides. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law; ages 16 and up helmets are recommended but are not required by law. We will enjoy a ride escort by officers of the Pensacola Police Department.
For much more information about the Slow Ride please visit Bike Pensacola on Facebook

WSRE Open House on Aug. 16
As part of WSRE’s August pledge drive for viewer support, the local public television station will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the WSRE studios in the Kugelman Center for Telecommunications at Pensacola State College. This free event will include production studio tours and PBS KIDS activities for children, including meet-and-greets with Clifford the Big Red Dog.
“This open house will provide an opportunity for the community to get a behind-the-scenes look at our operations and to learn about our programming and productions, as well as our educational services and public media mission,” said WSRE General Manager Jill Hubbs.
The station also invites the public to participate in its I Love WSRE viewer support campaign, designed to increase awareness about the breadth of station services and its value to the community. Station supporters are encouraged to share their own WSRE stories by submitting video or written testimonials about why they support public television at wsre.org/value.
Video testimonials will also be filmed during the open house event, which is free and open to the public. Ample parking is available on campus near the Jean & Paul Amos Studio entrance. WSRE is located at the corner of College Boulevard and 12th Avenue.
