Local bartenders and mixologists will be showcasing the chemistry, biology, and physics behind preparing these exciting cocktails...expand your vodka-bulary by sampling these scientific creations. The evening will also include light refreshments, live music, and chances to win prizes. All proceeds benefit the Emerald Coast Science Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.   • It's Military Appreciation Day at the museum! All active duty members, veterans, and their families receive free admission to the museum today with valid military ID. Simply present your military ID at check in to receive museum access for your family.

    Schedule of Events
    -Check out the sciPad and play interactive games on our room-sized iPad from 12-3 p.m.
    -Join us for a Creature Feature at 1:30 p.m. where you can get up close with some of the center's Animal Ambassadors. Seating for the Creature Feature is available on a first come, first served basis. No reservations accepted.
    -Museum indoor exhibit halls and outdoor exploration spaces are open 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • We're hosting our Second Annual Homeschool Science Fair! Both competitive and non-competitive divisions are available for participation. Students ages 6 and up are invited to participate in the fair; students must be able to present their experiments on their own for our judges. This is an excellent opportunity for all homeschool students looking to explore the various STEM disciplines. Light refreshments provided.   • Kiwanis Club of Big Lagoon is bringing the community together with a delicious pancake, sausage, fruit, juice, milk, and coffee. Bring the kids, they love Kiwanis pancakes. Snowbirds are also welcome. This is a free event, but donations are accepted.
  • Grab a glass of vino and celebrate Women’s History month! Learn about the pioneers that shaped our world as we showcase several of our Animal Ambassadors and discuss the groundbreaking scientists they were named after. Come for the snacks, drinks, and cute critters, and stay for the awe-inspiring stories. This event is limited to 25 guests; we recommend grabbing your free tickets online or call us at 850-664-1261 to secure your space. All genders are welcome to join this event, but guests must be ages 21 and over.

  • Jenni L. Baggett earned her BA and MA at the University of West Florida graduating with her Master's in 2022. Since then, she’s been working as an archaeologist for Wiregrass Archaeological Consulting. In addition to many other exciting projects, she’s been working on the Mobile River Bridge Archaeological Project.

    Jenni Baggett’s paper provides a preliminary foundation for identifying non-heterosexual and non-cisgender identities in the archaeological record as part of the Mobile River Bridge Archaeological Project. The paper includes an overview of Mobile's rich LGBTQ+ history, including the city's once-thriving gay district, and reviews the challenges associated with identifying sexuality at the intersection of race and gender.
  • Join the Emerald Coast Science Center at the Fort Walton Beach Library for this free event. We’ll host several solar activities indoors before safely viewing the eclipse outside.

    Activities
    •Let your creativity shine as you create your own Sun and Moon on paper plates. Then you can chart the progress of the Eclipse across the sky right in your own hands.
    •Ultraviolet (UV) light is an invisible type of light that comes from the Sun. UV light in small doses is a good thing - it gives our bodies vitamin D and keeps us from feeling sad or depressed. But too much UV light can be dangerous. Learn about the power of UV rays and how to keep yourself safe the next time you're at the beach while making a bracelet, necklace, or bookmark with these magical UV beads.
    •Enjoy hands-on exploration as you create your own 3-Hole-PUNCH Pinhole Projectors, experiencing the marvel of optics firsthand. Safely observe the Sun and discover the art of image projection during eclipses or on any sunny day with your personalized projector.
