  • The Excelsior Band began on November 23, 1883, celebrating the birth of John A. Pope's son, John C. Pope.

    The Excelsior Band, believed to be the oldest continuous marching Jazz band in the United States, will celebrate its 104th Anniversary with a free concert at the Mobile History Museum on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 2:00 PM.

    The band has received numerous local, state, regional, and national awards since its inception. Among the awards received are 213 Alabama State Council on the Arts Folk Heritage Award and the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Award.
  • Bagdad Village is hosting a Christmas Tour of homes on Saturday, December 2nd. Four homes and one church in the Bagdad historic district will be open to participants who want to see the features of homes built in the 1800's.

    Tours will be conducted between the hours of 10:00 and 4:00.

    The tour has appropriately been named "A Heart Pine Christmas Tour" in recognition of the lumber produced at the local mill between 1830 and 1939. Music, refreshments, and a walk-through history will make this a "must do" event.

    Activities will begin at the museum located at 4512 Church Street in Bagdad.

    Tickets are available now at the Bagdad Museum between 10:00 and 12:00 on November 11, 18, and on December 2nd at the door.

  • Breakfast with Santa features a pancake and egg breakfast as well as events including pony rides, wagon rides, face painting, crafts, a bouncy house, a silent auction with great items and of course, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

    All proceeds benefit Horse Healing, a nonprofit organization offering equine therapy to mentally, emotionally, and physically handicapped individuals.
  • The Choral Society of Pensacola will present two performances of "Christmas Messiah," hosted by the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, one on Friday, December 1 at 7:30 pm and one on Saturday, December 2 at noon. The program features excerpts from Handel’s masterwork (including the complete Christmas portion and the famed “Hallelujah” chorus), as well as arrangements of three familiar carols and Jennifer Higdon's ethereal "O Magnum Mysterium."

    The music will be performed by the Society’s 100-voice chorus and chamber orchestra, conducted by artistic director Peter Steenblik. In addition, the concert showcases four of Pensacola Opera's Jan Miller Studio Artists as soloists, soprano Nicole Heinen, mezzo-soprano Alexandra Sanchez, baritone Bernardo Medeiros (from this season), and tenor Randy Ho (from last).

  • The PMA and Experience UWF Downtown Lecture Series presents Flapper Fiction and Flapper Authors of the 1920s - Author Talk with David M. Earle.

    Join UWF’s Professor David Earle as he discusses flapper authors of the 1920s and "Where All Good Flappers Go," his recent collection of flapper stories principally sourced from jazz-age magazines.

    The book — the first-ever collection dedicated to flapper stories — includes favorite authors such as F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald but also recovers lost female authors published in the pulp magazines of the 1920s.

    David will be sharing stories from and about the book and signing copies. The book will be available for purchase.
