Gordon Weakens to a Tropical Depression

Update 9:30 a.m. Sept. 5 Gordon made landfall late Tuesday evening on the Mississippip Coast and has weakened to a tropical depression. Heavy rains will continue for the next few days. Coastal flooding avdvisories are in effect through Wednesday afternoon as well as a flash flooding warning for the Pensacola area. Be cautious of high water. High surf will continue along the coast. 

Update 6 p.m. Views from Navarre Beach:

Update 4 p.m.  Tropical Storm Gordon has strengthened some as it heads to north central Gulf Coast. Max sustained winds are at 70 mph. Conditions will continue to deteriorate in the next hour or two. Flooding risk will increase as the core of the storm begins to move onshore. There is also some increase in the tornado threat. 

Update 1:30 p.m. Rain from the outerbands of Tropical Storm Gordon are reaching the coastal Florida panhandle.

Storm surge warnings are in effect for coastal Mobile County and a storm surge watch continues east of Navarre Beach. The greatest risk of storm surge will be late tonight and into Wednesday morning. Heavy rainfall and flooding is possible in the Gulf Coast area with expected three to five inches of rain. Some localized areas can receive as much as six to 10 inches of rain.

Gordon continues to head toward the Northern Gulf Coast at nearly 15 mph. The storm is expectd to make landfall this evening. The wind field has widened, making bridge closures more likely. Travelers with bridges as a part of their commute should make it to their final destination by 4 p.m. Tuesday. 

Update 11:30 a.m. Tropical Storm Gordan is currently 140 miles south of Pensacola with a storm intensity of 65 mph.  

The National Weather Service reports heavy rainfall is expected to start mid-afternoon and continue into the evening. Heavy rainfall could create incidents of flash flooding primarly southwest of a line running from Waynesboro to Stockton to Pensacola. 

Update 10:30 a.m.  Sustained tropical storm force winds from Gordon are likely to begin moving onshore the northern Gulf of Mexico Coast this afternoon. A hurricane warning is still in effect from the mouth of the Pearl River to the Alabama-Florida border.  

The National Weather Service also warns of dangerous rip currents and advises people to stay out of the waters as Tropical Storm Gordon approaches. 

Previous Story: 

A tropical storm warning is in effect in the Northwest Florida area, inland Mobile, and Baldwin County and portions of Southeast Mississippi. Tropical Storm Gordon is expected to make landfall in the Gulf Coast region around 8 p.m. Tuesday.  

The storm may make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane over the central Gulf Coast. Mobile and Baldwin Counties are under hurricane warnings. 

Weather conditions are expected to get worse as early as midday today in the coastal areas. Flash flooding, storm surge, dangerous surf, tornadoes and strong winds are potential impacts.
