For the first time in 20 years, there will be a new mayor in the city of Milton next year.
With all precincts reporting the unofficial vote totals show that Wesley Meiss defeated long time incumbent mayor Guy Thompson by about a 59 - 41 margin in Tuesday's election. Meiss gave up his seat on the city council to seek the mayor's office. He is looking forward to making the city government more accessible to the people of Milton by putting council meeting on line and starting them at an hour where people can more easily attend. He also said he will work to keep the county courthouse in the city.
Thompson, who was first elected mayor of Milton in 1994 was seeking his sixth term in office. Of the nearly 6,700 registered voters in the city of Milton, just 1,615 cast a ballot in Tuesday's vote.
