Covenant Care is opening a new inpatient hospice care center at West Florida Hospital. On Thursday, officials from both organizations held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the relocation of the hospital’s existing hospice operation to a newly renovated space featuring numerous upgrades.

The new Covenant Inpatient Hospice Center at Sacred Heart Hospital began accepting patients earlier this month.

When the grand opening celebration was held days before, Brian LeBlanc attended as a representative of Covenant.

WUWF has been following LeBlanc’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease, and so we joined him there.

It was a bittersweet occasion.

Before the ribbon-cutting, LeBlanc worked his way through the crowd gathered for the Open House..

“How you doing friend,” an acquaintance asked. “I’m good; I’m good,” he replied.

The Pensacola community now has a new option for end of life care for seriously ill patients and their families with the opening of the Covenant Care Inpatient Hospice Center at Sacred Heart Hospital.

“When you look around, all I can say is wow,” said Covenant Care President and CEO Jeff Mislevy, referring to the new hospice center and the crowd of supporters gathered for the recent ribbon cutting.

A year ago we were introduced to Brian LeBlanc. The Pensacola resident was diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer’s in 2014 and he’s been sharing his story in hopes of raising awareness about the disease.

LeBlanc has been pretty busy lately, especially in November, which is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

On Saturday, November 12, LeBlanc drove himself to Seville Square in downtown Pensacola, where he and others in the community gathered for Covenant Care’s annual Walk for Alzheimer’s.

Covenant Care and Sacred Heart Hospital are collaborating on a new program to address the needs of end-of-life patients and their families.

Covenant will open a 10,000 square foot center on the first floor of Sacred Heart’s Pensacola campus. President and CEO Jeff Mislevy says it will be fully staffed, with patients and families receiving round-the-clock hospice and palliative care services.
