The Santa Rosa County library system will host an internet safety class for children in grades third through fifth. Congress has designated June as Internet Safety Month. Libraries in Santa Rosa County are trying to make young students’ internet time a bit less hazardous.
"With school (being) out, there's a lot more time for kids to be on the internet" said Sergeant Rich Aloy, the Public Information Officer for the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Department. "So our intention is to teach children and parents how to maneuver around the internet safely." Kim Purvis, the Crime Prevention Coordinator from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, will present information about Internet Safety and Cyberbullying at branches of the Santa Rosa County Library. Sgt. Aloy says she be teaching students "what to look for, who to talk to who not to talk to, and just some simple tips on when to contact your parents and say 'hey, this just doesn't seem to be right'".
The classes are geared towards third, fourth and fifth graders, but everyone is welcome to attend, including parents. The first class is this Thursday morning at 11 in Pace. There will be classes in Milton and Jay on Friday afternoon. Next week, Purvis will be giving her class in Gulf Breeze on Tuesday morning and finally Navarre on Wednesday morning. Parents can also find out about separate classes on internet safety aimed directly at them.
