Santa Rosa County Offers Low Cost Pet Spay Program

Pet owners in Santa Rosa County are being offered a low cost opportunity to have their animals spayed or neutered. Dale Hamilton, Director of Animal Services in Santa Rosa County says the county received a $25,000 grant from the Florida Animal Friend license plate program to help income-eligible residents of Santa Rosa County get their pets spayed or neutered. The program began on October 1 and will run until the grant money is gone.

This is the fourth time in eight years that Santa Rosa County received the grant from Florida Animal Friend to run the low cost spay and neuter program. The county can apply for the funds every other year. Hamilton says it's important for people to have their pets spayed or neutered, especially cats. He says the county has hundreds of stray kittens every year that cannot be adopted out or rescued and must be euthanized.

While the operation to spay or neuter a dog or cat can run over $200, this program requires only a $20  co-pay that goes directly to the vet who performs the operation. Applicants are taken on a first come first serve basis, and again the program ends when the funds run out, so Hamilton suggest people take advantage quickly. If you would like to see if you are eligible for the low cost spay and neuter program in Santa Rosa County, you can visit the animal shelter and fill out an application. You can also find an online application HERE.
