In this week’s Economic Report, Dr. Rick Harper discusses the Florida Gaming Impact Study and various issues related to the Florida Legislature’s plans to address the comprehensive gaming legislation in the 2014 session.  The Florida Senate Committee on Gaming is holding a series of public hearings around the state.  One of those was held this week at Pensacola State College.

Additionally, Harper says there was a better than expected jobs report for the month of October.  There was an increase of just over 200,000 jobs.  On a related front, the unemployment rose slightly two-tenths of one percent.  And, Janet Yellen, President Obama’s nominee to become the next Federal Reserve chairman testifies before the Senate Banking Committee.  Yellen told the panel that the economy has regained ground lost to the Great Recession, but with unemployment at 7.3 percent the Fed’s support still will be needed.   Dr. Rick Harper is Director of the University of West Florida Office of Economic Development and Engagement. He’s currently serving as Senior Economic Policy Advisor to the Florida Senate.
