Here's a look at the news you need to know this week
Escambia Children's Trust
The Escambia Children’s Trust spent most of 2021 filling out its 10-member board, organizing, and setting policy and bylaws. This week, they'll have the final interviews with top five candidates for the executive director. Sandra Averhart has more details.
COVID on the rise
The latest data from FDOH shows a major rise in COVID cases across the state. Last week, the state added nearly 400,000 more cases and Friday had one of the largest single-day increases. Testing efforts have also ramped up in Escambia County.
Florida Legislative Session
The state's legislative session will convene on Tuesday. In the next couple of weeks, WUWF will feature interviews with lawmakers about the year ahead. To start things off, Dave Dunwoody spoke with Sen. Doug Broxson. Keep listening for more interviews with state representatives.
Gun bills

- One of New York's deadliest fires has killed at least 19, including nine children. The cause of the fire was a malfunctioning space heater which sparked a fire in a Bronx high-rise.
- In Chicago, a dispute between the city's public school system and its teacher's union drags on, with the two sides continuing to negotiate for an end to a work stoppage by the city's educators.
