Live Well Northwest Florida

A survey of the overall health of people in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties has been released. It’s called the Community Health Needs Assessment, and it’s conducted every three years by the Live Well Partnership for a Healthy Community and a team of local partners. "The purpose of (the study) is to really look at how healthy our community is, what's making us sick, what's causing us to die early," said Nora Bailey, the executive director of the Live Well Partnership.

Sacred Heart Hospital is launching “Prevent T-2,” a new diabetes program aimed at helping pre-diabetic people avoid development of the disease.

“T-2” refers to type-2 diabetes.

“A ‘pre-diabetic’ is a person who falls into a blood sugar range that’s not quite diabetes yet,” says Ethel Hoyt, a registered nurse and patient educator at Sacred Heart. She is the program’s facilitator.

At one time, Lou Brock was the fastest man in Major League Baseball. He had over 900 stolen bases, including one season when he swiped 118. Last month, the 76 year old Hall of Famer had his left leg amputated just below the knee, the result of an infection made worse by diabetes.

According to the latest numbers from the CDC, over 29 million Americans are living with Diabetes, and over a quarter of them don’t know it. And when you have diabetes, you not only have to check your blood sugar and insulin levels. You also have to check your feet.
